' Work-related learning is defined as 'learning about work ' - Ofsted

Introduction to Work-Related Learning

Work-Related Learning has been defined by OFSTED as learning about work.

This includes visits to work places, work shadowing, Careers Education, Applied GCSE or GNVQ courses) learning through work (eg. work placements, Saturday jobs, Young Enterprise, work simulations) and learning for work (eg. Key skills development, career management skills, interview and presentation skills, workplace specific skills).

Pupils should have the opportunity to gain the qualifications, skills and attitudes they need to improve their employability, and develop a knowledge and understanding of the world of work and its demands.

From September 2004 there will be a statutory requirement that schools include work-related learning within the curriculum for all students at key stage 4.

Guidance has been produced that sets out the statutory requirement and provides a framework, which indicates the minimum requirements that schools should consider in making their provision.

This is "Work-Related Learning For All at key Stage 4 - Guidance for Implementing the statutory requirement from 2004"

The guidance has been distributed to schools and may be downloaded from the QCA website at:

or ordered from QCA publications. (Order ref: QCA/03/1168).

Many schools already offer some work-related learning opportunities.

Work experience, industry days, business links, visits, and business mentoring all contribute towards helping pupils gain an awareness of the world of work, and a successful transition to working life.

The Work-Related Learning Framework however, stipulates work contexts within the curriculum, and using working practices and work environments as curriculum learning contexts to stimulate and motivate all pupils.

The responsibility for different elements of pupils' Work-Related Learning is usually delegated to different members of staff, and so it is important that Senior Management teams develop a whole school vision for WRL, together with coherent approaches to planning and coordinating the curriculum to ensure that pupils are given opportunities to develop and evidence their WRL and Enterprise knowledge and skills both in and out of school.

Support For Work-Related Learning

The LEACAN Work-Related Learning Toolkit

The WRL Toolkit is a source of materials, which offer practical advice, information and tools showing how WRL programmes can be planned and developed.

It is a live document. You can add to it and customise it as a framework for your own partnership.

You can use it for specific purposes such as developing policy or managing quality assurance.

All East Riding schools have been provided with the LEACAN Toolkit, and Vocational Coordinators have had training in its use.

The Toolkit is based on the following principles underpinning effective work-related learning.

Work-Related Learning:

  • is for the whole ability range, and the Toolkit recognises that there should be some WRL for all students and more for some;
  • includes out of school activity reinforced in school through pupils' received curriculum;
  • is initiated and supported by staff development;
  • is promoted through nationally recognised qualifications with clear progression routes reflecting teachers' accountability to both the DfES and Sector Skills standards;
  • and is undertaken with expert partners.

The Toolkit has three particular focuses, which are:

  • the use of extended training placements;
  • the accreditation to national standards of the learning that takes place on those placements by the use of DfES approved qualifications;
  • the staff development needs of advisers, teachers and other staff supporting pupils on placements.
