' significant opportunities for self-expression, for questioning and for giving vent to creative ideas ' - David Mell, CCfL Organiser

Creative Contexts for Learning 2007

Building
In 2007 Creative Contexts for Learning had the subtitle 'Building'.

building [noun]
1. Something that is built for a purpose e.g. human habitation; a structure;
2. The act, process, art or occupation of constructing.

The theme was, as usual, interpreted in a variety of different ways with a large percentage of schools focusing on aspects of the built environment.

This included using specific buildings as a starting point for the creation of poems and stories, sculptures, films, dance, paintings and photography to name but a few.

The 'building' theme provided significant opportunities for self-expression, for questioning and for giving vent to creative ideas, which is, after all, what that the Arts do best!

Each edition of Creative Contexts for Learning last for an academic year and culminates in a celebratory exhibition in the stunning location of Beverley Minster.

Introduction to the 2007 Edition of CCfL

Testing for the 2007 edition of the Project took the form of pre- and post-Project Knowledge and Attitude Questionnaires and a short written task using the well known photograph by Charles C Ebbets, 'Lunch A-top A Skyscraper' as the stimulus.

Creative Contexts for Learning seeks to provide a rich, stimulating experience for pupils, bringing them into direct contact with talented and creative professional Arts practitioners and the best Projects are the ones where an Arts practitioner has been in school for a residency rather than just for a single session.

The benefits to children and teachers are further enhanced where the Arts professional has worked with small numbers, developing relationships and focusing on working practices and processes, on creative thinking and time for meaningful discussion.

Immersion in an activity and the development of a close working relationship with an artist has been proven to pay dividends and to be much more fulfilling for pupils, teachers, other members of staff, parents and for artists.

Preparatory and developmental work is essential and many schools undertake this as a matter of course.

As part of the ongoing creative process children (and teachers) are encouraged to keep notes, drawings, photographs, text, research etc. in a creative journal or sketchbook, which is then used as a reference in the creation of artwork, music, dance, film etc.

Not only is the creative journal a useful tool and resource it also make the Arts professional's visit more successful and has guaranteed higher levels of engagement.

At the conclusion of the Project each Co-ordinator prepares a Report, which is an opportunity to celebrate children's achievements in print, supported by documentary evidence, including artwork, images and photographs.

The Report brings together initial plans, testing and assessment, details of art activities undertaken, reports about artists and a review of the Initiative as a whole.

The Report also provides an opportunity to consider what impact the Project has had on the school, what the outcomes were, both expected and unexpected, and what the implications are for future school and/or staff development.

As well as being celebratory the Report should also be critical and analytical and make reference to the success of the Project in the light of the original aims and objectives.

The Co-ordinators' Reports are archived at the School Improvement Services' Skirlaugh Offices and are available as reference materials for teachers and educational professionals.

The Reports also helped to shape and inform this final celebratory document.

The Creative Contexts for Learning Exhibition, held in the glorious setting of Beverley Minster is likewise an opportunity to celebrate achievements and to give an overview of the Project and its effect and those who have been involved.

Inevitably it is a snapshot albeit a very vibrant and valuable one.

The Exhibition is always visited by large numbers people from the East Riding and also from further afield and is an annual highlight for many.

Images from previous Creative Contexts for Learning exhibitions can be found on the eRiding Media Library website via the link below:

Many schools also staged exhibitions, performances and celebrations for the benefit of their immediate and wider community, especially when the focus had been on an artform such as music or dance where performance is a key element.

Since 2003 Projects have been thematically linked:

  • 2003 - A Sense of Place. A strong geographical focus and with reference to the QCA Art & Design Schemes of Work.
  • 2004 - Word Up! The Arts, Language and Text.
  • 2005 - Transformations Environmental issues, recycling and the use of found materials in the Arts with a strong multi-cultural and spiritual dimension.
  • 2006 - Numbers: Facts and Fiction. Mathematics, language and the Arts.
  • 2007 - Building.
