' Both primary and secondary schools will need to consider which aspects of their current liaison activities are supporting the learning of their pupils, which activities need to be modified and which might usefully be reduced. ' - Galton, Grey, Ruddock et al, University of Cambridge, 2003

Effective Transition from Primary to Secondary School
Our intention in this document is to provide some practical guidelines for schools to assist in ensuring that pupils' transition
from primary to secondary school is as 'seamless' and constructive as possible.
Recent research from a range of sources has identified specific issues relating to the impact of 'moving on up', the phrase coined by
Professor Tim Brighouse, Director of Education, City of Birmingham.
It is essential that schools should make sure that pupil progression and curriculum continuity are in place as pupils move across the
phases.
In this way they will support both high standards of achievement and pupils' enjoyment of their time in school.

Just read through the booklet, I think it is really good and wish I had been given something similar when
my young man went into Year 1. At the time he had some health issues which caused me to worry about how
he would cope.
As a parent this booklet would have given me some reassurance and more confidence to approach
the teacher if ever I felt I needed to talk, without feeling like a neurotic mother!
I imagine that today's parents of Foundation Stage pupils could actually take the booklet into school during
discussions with teachers as a tool to refer to.

[10 ] 'Linking Learning' posterSupporting children in their learning journey from the Foundation Stage into Key Stage 1.
[11 ] 'Little Steps Forward' booklet
The latest booklet in the 'Bridges to Success' series has been produced to
support the transition process from Foundation Stage into Year 1.
It has been developed as a result of the findings from the
LA 'Continuity of Learning' project, led by Angela Jones.
The aim of the booklet is to promote good practice in ensuring smooth transition from one learning environment to another: a
process that needs to be as seamless as possible and provide continuity and progression.
It is intended to help adults and children understand what happens when children move from the Foundation Stage
into Year 1 and includes information for parents/carers and activity pages for children to complete.

KS2/3 Transition Project in Bridlington and South Holderness Partnerships
Following the KS2/3 transition project, an LEA guidance document in the 'Assessment for Action'
series was produced to assist teachers in managing effective transfer from primary to secondary
school.
The document is available in Word format under ERYC Assessment for Action Documents on the main
menu.
South Holderness and Bridlington schools have developed/are continuing to devlopop transition
links as a result of their involvement in the project.
In both partnerships, working parties are established to consider bridging materials for use
with Y6 children following KS2 SATs each year.
Some use is also made of the QCA bridging units, especially for mathematics.
Some of the Literacy bridging units that have been developed are available through 'Links' on
the main menu.
If you click on 'Bridging units for Literacy' you can have access to the materials that have
been developed through cross phase liaison that is now well-established.
