What Will a Successful SEAL School Look Like?
Whole School
SEAL schools will recognisable due to the following features.
- Calm cheerful, bright productive atmosphere.
- Good cooperative skills among staff and pupils.
- Staff and children using the language of SEAL.
- Pupils engaged and enthusiastic - eager to learn and take risks/rise to challenges.
- Staff working with pupils in a positive and enthusiastic manner.
- School and classroom rules in child friendly, positive language.
- SEAL in evidence throughout the school in lessons, displays, children’s work, assemblies as well as in social interactions.
- There will be at least two assemblies related to SEAL - one to launch the theme one to review what we have explored in classes.
- Displays around school will reflect the theme being explored.
- Displays celebrating/ reflecting good behaviour.
- There will be interactive displays.
- Sharing and valuing different points of view.
- Happier and safer playgrounds.
- Happier children and staff.
Interpersonal
SEAL schools will be places where the following conditions exist.
- Children and adults being able to recognise and talk about their feelings and having a common language.
- Lots of smiles, happy faces.
- Fun and laughter between all members of the school community.
- Some shared social activities parents/staff/children (any combination).
- Active role modelling by all staff.
- Everyone polite to one another, remembering to say please and thank you, and showing care and concern for each other - staff to staff, staff
to pupil, pupil to pupil, staff to parents.
- Tolerant motivated positive atmosphere.
- Calm classrooms where people are friendly approachable and achieving well.
- Children playing well together, sharing, taking turns.
- Peaceful Problem Solving strategies being used.
- People being helpful to one another - holding doors open etc.
Curriculum
The curriculum will be improved to address the following.
- Whole school assemblies linked to the SEAL themes.
- Everyone aware of the theme being taught in school and any target behaviours being promoted - and knowing how to promote them both in and out
of the classroom.
- Being taught in all classes - full class participation and applied in all subjects.
- Identified in planning - shown on long term / medium term and cross curricular planning.
- Posters, feelings thermometers and displays in evidence around the school.
- Teaching of cooperative learning (sharing, supporting, helping, problem solving) to promote high levels of this across the school.
- All staff aware of, teaching and encouraging the peaceful problem solving process.
- Staff modelling expressing their feelings and views showing empathy and understanding of others.
Parents
Parents will see schools address the following issues.
- Will feel valued and made welcome by the school - and so wanting to come back because of the positive environment.
- Will have a positive supportive relationship with the school.
- They may be involved in school life in a positive way.
- Teachers and parents sitting together and chatting - perhaps having a coffee together.
- Will have faith in the teachers.
- Will be 'dragged off' the playground by children and staff to see good work produced that day.
- Involving themselves in their child’s social and educational development.
- Greater attendance at meetings held at school (Parents evening/consultations).
- There will be an active PTA.
- More parents attending school celebration assemblies.
- Wanting to be more informed as a result of the work they are seeing.
- Will have a knowledge and understanding of SEAL themes and beliefs.
- Some will be using the Gold materials.
- Adopting the peaceful problem solving process at home.
