Information:
Marie Helks is a tutor at St John's College, York. She successfully ran the course for the second time in the Summer Term 2004.
This Module is the third part of the the Certificate of Educational Practice for teaching assistants. Candidates may choose whether or not they wish to accredit. Accreditation takes the form of a Reflective Learning Journal, a structured Child Study and a Resource File. Some reading and practical activities will also be required. Delegates who completed the Mathematics Module in Spring 2005 must also reapply. The module looks at contextual analysis, the role of the specialist TA, oral language, phonic knowledge and phonological awareness, supported reading and supported writing. Places are available for TAs who only wish to attend the Literacy Module and who do not want accreditation or who just want to accredit this module (which can be counted towards the York St John Foundation Degree).
Comments from TAs who previously attended the course.
'After completing this course I feel that I have much more confidence in supporting children during Literary sessions.'
'thoroughly enjoyable, worthwhile course', 'the course was excellent'.

Objectives:
  • To provide opportunities for the professional development of teaching assistants.
  • To increase TAs' knowledge and understanding of the Literacy Curriculum in order to improve support for pupils and teachers.
Please note that failure to attend a course to which you have applied will result in an administration charge of £10.00 unless a cancellation code is quoted.  A similar charge will be made if delegates attend without having made a formal application.
