p10. The Development Module
This is an example of how a module might look. All modules will embody the key principles outlined here.
Exemplar MIM: 'Taking Literacy to the Highest Level' - Enhancing Literacy
This would be an ideal module for those schools who have recently embedded, through CPD, the theme of 'improving writing' linked to the primary framework. There will be a range of workshops which delegates will be able to access according to their need. All delegates will be able to communicate with each other and the course tutors via a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Broad Outline of this Module |
This would be an ideal module for those who have secured the basics of 'improving writing' and are ready to move on to extending their practice through, for example:
|
Target Audience / Learner / Group |
In order to build capacity in school, this module is for Subject Leaders plus one, or more, practitioners from their school. |
Intended Outcomes / Benefits |
Assessment of writing levels post-course should indicate raised levels of attainment. Attitudes towards writing should be more positive and this should be reflected in the results of the post-course survey. |
Time Commitment |
|
Reading / Media / Resources |
There will be an expectation that delegates will research their own media resources after intial guidance. On these web pages you will find ideas and research, elements of which will be included in this module.
|
Pre Tasks |
Identify a group of target pupils who are reluctant writers and carry out a perception survey in order to ascertain their current writing level. |
Demonstrations/Modelling |
Course leaders will demonstrate a range of techniques and resources. Delegates could also be asked to share with colleagues resources and techniques they have used in the classroom. |
Mentoring / Coaching |
This will take place both at face to face training and as part of the support using the VLE. It is anticipated that the subject leader and their colleague will engage in this on a regular basis in school. |
'Classroom'-based Training |
There will be 2-and-a-half days of central training. |
Collaboration / Networking |
Delegates will be able to discuss issues both with each other and the course tutors via the VLE. Later in the course, resources and methodologies could be exchanged. |
Gap Tasks |
Delegates will be expected to experiment with different ways of using moving images within the extended teaching sequence for writing. Working in a cross-curricular way, and the extensive use of a wide range of speaking and listening activities are other aspects within this module that delegates may wish to select. |
Evaluation and Assessment |
Evaluation will take place though the completion of a post-course writing perception survey which should indicate improved attitudes to writing. Through the normal half termly assessments carried out in the school, the impact of the work should be reflected in the quality of writing. As a result of this levels of attainment will be raised. The development of a creative and flexible approach to the teaching of literacy within school. The effective use of a range of visual approaches and integration of the extended teaching sequence will raise attainment across the ability range. |
