' The real problem is not whether machines think but whether men do. '- B. F. Skinner (1904 - 1990)
Course Code: S2C1776 - 'Mechanisms and Mechanical Sculptures' - Creative Approaches to Primary Design Technology
The course was devised and run in June 2004 to explore mechanisms and machinery designed for fun.
The course was aimed at teachers seeking an opportunity for an imaginative approach to units in the primary design technology schemes of work.
Starting from an arts perspective, and with reference to the work of artists such as Jean Tinguely and Tim Hunkin, the course made links between design & technology and art & design subject areas, and sought to offer alternative outcomes which can be developed in the classroom.
The objectives of the course were:
- to consider the work of artists such as Jean Tinguely, Tim Hunkin etc. who often create 'alternative' or humorous machines;
- to develop and extend elements of the Primary Units of work, notably Units 2A, 2C, 3C, 5C and 6C;
- to consider creative ideas for developing the primary design technology curriculum, which can be used and extended in the classroom.
