Assessment and Marking

Marking must be allocated on best fit model awarded on the basis of the general level of the work.

The Awarding Body may give guidance in the allocation of marks for certain pieces of evidence for some or all units.

If the work satisfies all the descriptors for one mark band than it is in the top of the mark band.

If it has some, but not all, of the features of the next mark band then it is in the lower to middle end of the next mark band.

Avoid allocating marks in the middle of a mark band as a safe bet as this is not a true reflection of the learners achievement. Likewise if a learner has met all of the criteria for mark band three please award full marks.

The Domain Assessor and whoever complied the assignment will work provided guidance on what the outcomes and evidence for each task and mark band should look like.

The Awarding Body criteria must be used to assess the learners work. At standardisation the Domain Assessor and the assessor/s will agree how many marks they will allocated to each outcome within a mark band. This will help provide consistency in assessment across the line.

Annotation of the evidence must clearly show how the marks have been awarded in relation to the marking criteria. Where a mark is to be allocated for achieving a learning outcome the evidence should be underlined or indicated and the assessment objective written in the right-hand margin.

It is good practise to:

  1. Identify where all the evidence for a learning objective is found
  2. The look back over the range of evidence and allocate the mark

The teacher assessing the work must input the marks onto the Consortium Mark and Moderation sheet (PL8.2) for that unit.

This form must then be forwarded to the Domain Assessor. The Domain Assessor will then complete their section of the form when they moderate that unit.

Marking Documentation

Primary Mark Sheet (PL 8.1)
- initial marking prior to marking being agreed

Mark and Moderation Sheet (8.2)
- completed once marking undertaken

Candidate Record Form (CRF)
- to be signed by learner when assignment is handed in
- marks and comments to be transferred once marking is agreed

Collating Learner Evidence

All learner evidence should be collated in a folder/polypocket/e-portfolio etc which must include the following:

  • All evidence to be assessed (where realistically possible)
  • Candidate Record Sheets for the unit- completed and signed
  • A title page (PL11) with:
    • the relevant specification name and number
    • candidate name
    • candidate number
    • centre name
    • centre number
    • date
  • Clearly page numbered
  • PLTS/ FS record sheet

All written learner evidence should have the following features:

  • Headings and sections where applicable;
  • Title page;
  • Contents page;
  • Page numbers;
  • Labelling of diagrams or tables;
  • Graphs or charts;
  • Appropriate font size or style;
