Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

The Revised EYFS (pdf 551kb opens in a new window)

was published on 3 March 2017 and came into force on 3 April 2017. It includes a requirement that to count in the staff to child ratios at level 3 staff who hold an Early Years Educator qualification must also hold a level 2 English and mathematics qualification. The revised EYFS also includes
the new paediatric first aid (PFA) training requirements
that were announced in July 2016 via the government response to the PFA consultation, including that all newly-qualified entrants to the early years workforce with a level 2 or 3 qualification must also have either a full or emergency PFA certificate within 3 months of starting work.

The four Principles into Practice themes express important principles underpinning effective practice in the care, development and learning of young children.

Each Principle is supported by four commitments which describe how the principle can be put into practice.

The four principles of the EYFS are:

  1. Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured

  2. Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships

  3. Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers; and

  4. Children embrace learning and development in different ways and at different rates. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities.
