Introduction to the AST Scheme

Vacancies arise when an individual Advanced Skills Teacher changes their role, or leaves to take up promoted posts.

Consultation on the Future Development of the Scheme

The AST scheme was introduced in the East Riding of Yorkshire in 2002 and we now have a team of ASTs who provide a wide variety of support across the Local Authority (click on the link below).

Updated resource

We are now inviting you to suggest areas for future support and also to consider supporting a member of your own staff to take on such a role.

Most of our ASTs are Local Authority ASTs who give support to areas identified in the EDP.

They are available to offer support to any school in the East Riding of Yorkshire, with requests being prioritised by their line manager.

A smaller number are Partnership ASTs, where the area of support is decided by the partnership.

These ASTs work just within their partnership schools and are line-managed by a senior member of staff within the partnership.

ASTs spend one day each week giving 'outreach' support to other schools and four days each week continuing their existing work in their own school.

Additional costs for ASTs are currently met via the Standards Fund; these cover the additional amount of their enhanced salary and also the costs of employing another teacher whilst the AST is engaged in outreach work.

There is no cost to the AST’s own school, and there is no cost to the schools receiving support.

There will be changes to the funding mechanism in 2006, but the DfES AST team have indicated that funding will continue for our team of 30 ASTs but incorporated as part of the general school budget.

They expect the Schools Budget Forum to agree to passport this funding to the schools with ASTs on their staff.

Agreement to this will enable the East Riding AST programme to continue to March 2008.

More information about the East Riding AST scheme is available here on eRiding.net and also at:

Alternatively you could contact one of us.

Please send us your suggestions for the future deployment of ASTs as soon as possible, preferably by e-mail.

In making suggestions please be mindful of the support that is already offered by others in the Local Authority, including CPMs and TLCs.

We look forward to hearing from you.
