' There's so much pollution in the air now that if it weren't for our lungs there'd be no place to put it all. ' - Robert Orben
Air Quality
Why do we monitor air quality?
Pollution of the environment means the release of substances, which are capable of causing harm to man or any other living
organisms, into air, land or water.
In many of the World's towns and cities air pollution is becoming a serious problem. It can cause alarming health problems, damage to buildings and inconvenience.
Local Air Quality Management (LAQM)
Local Air Quality Management (LAQM) was introduced in Part IV of the Environment Act 1995.
Under section 82 of the Act, local authorities are required to periodically review air quality across their area and to
assess whether it is likely to achieve the air quality standards and objectives first set out in the National Air
Quality Strategy.
The air quality objectives themselves have been formalised in the Air Quality Regulations 1997 (and subsequent amendment
regulations) and the main purpose of the review and assessment process is to identify those areas within the local authority boundary
where these objectives are unlikely to be met for one or more prescribed pollutant.

Air pollution can cause alarming health problems, damage to buildings and inconvenience. |
Where it has been established that the objective(s) will not be met, the local authority is required, under section 83 of the Act, to
designate an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) and to produce and implement an air quality action plan to bring about the desired
improvements in air quality.
The air quality objectives are subject to regular review to reflect the further understanding of the health implications of
atmospheric pollution resulting from scientific and technological advances.
