Background to the Project
This consists of 'layers' of maps with linked data sets associated with them.
For some time the members of the School Improvement Service team have been aware of the
potential for the curriculum application of this system.
One of the barriers to making GIS available to schools was cost.
However, software is now available free of charge from ESRI (UK)
Ltd. which enables interaction with the system.
The constraint of this software is that new data sets cannot be
created using it.
The project forms a part of the LEA Education Development Plan
(EDP) for 2002-2005.
The project aims to:
- raise awareness in schools of the East Riding Council intranet site through the use of electronic maps of the East Riding of Yorkshire
- enable pupils and teachers to develop ICT skills through a range of curriculum contexts (especially history and geography)
- develop GIS support materials, for use throughout all appropriate East Riding schools in Key Stage 2 (KS2) and KS3 onwards
- develop GIS support materials for 'bridging units' to enhance progression in learning for pupils from KS2 to KS3
- identify sources of additional data sets that schools might find useful
- make such materials available for other Yorkshire and Humber region schools through the Yorkshire and Humber Region Broadband Project (YHRBP)
GIS Launch to Schools
The work from the GIS (Geographical Information System) Project and the GIS resources were launched to East Riding Schools on the
14th and 15th November 2005.
The course (S2C3109) was funded for one primary subject leader (either history or geography) from each school to attend and receive
the materials.
The course objectives were:
- to be able to embed ICT in history and geography teaching and learning;
- to understand the curriculum potential of electronic map resources.
35 East Riding Schools attended the launch and received training for the software and resources.
The launch day also included a presentation from Rachel Julian, Senior Research Officer for the Data Observatory.

They are entitled to access any of the above standard SLA products.
Copies can be made for all internal requirements of schools, and

If Ordnance Survey material is used in a school prospectus or magazine, sold

Non-LEA schools and colleges need a licence from Ordnance Survey,
which is supplied at no cost.

User Guide for MapExplorer
This CD has maps of the East Riding of Yorkshire and MapExplorer software which enables the maps to be viewed at different
levels.
The user guide can be printed from the East Riding Maps CD in schools.
O.S. Information and Free Maps
Every school with Y7 pupils has been contacted by Ordnance Survey to offer all next year's Y7 pupils a free 1:25000 scale
map of their area, plus 1 free for every 25 pupils for teachers.
To register for this offer, a delegate from school will need to visit the following website:

East Riding Data Observatory
The East Riding Data Observatory was launched on Tuesday 1st November at the following web address:
The Data Observatory is a web-based resource providing demographic and socio-economic data and information, around six themes:
- demographics and households;
- deprivation;
- education and skills;
- economy and employment;
- housing;
- people and society.
The information is presented either as data tables, or as thematic maps that show the distribution of the data across the
authority area.
The mapping tools allow the data to be shown at varying scales and with different geographic/administrative boundaries.
The site is aimed at residents, businesses, community and voluntary groups, students, teachers and researchers.
The site includes links to other useful websites and sources of information, a section for reports, such as ward and parish
profiles (which provide summary data from the 2001 Census), and a Bulletin Board for user comments and discussions.
If you have any comments about the Data Observatory, or would like further information, please use the feedback section on the site, or
contact:

Google Earth
Google Earth allows you to ‘visit’ different places around the world and look the terrain or buildings of the area.
It can be a very useful classroom resource.
It should however be used by the teacher on and interactive whiteboard or with a projector, rather than being accessed
individually by pupils.
Google offer a free version of Google Earth - it requires Broadband to work and may not work on machines more than 4 years old.
There is further guidance on the website.
Please read the copyright and licensing information before downloading the software.
