Introduction to Inclusion
Inclusion is said to be the keystone of Government Education Policy.
In the most recent National Curriculum handbook, inclusion is viewed as
central to providing effective learning opportunities for ALL pupils.
The use of the term reflects a much wider social inclusion agenda which seeks to
minimise the likelihood of at risk groups being excluded from their local
schools, their cultures and their communities. It is an umbrella term which may
cover the following aspects.
Inclusion in Education
Inclusion in education involves the processes of increasing
the participation of students in, and reducing their exclusion from the
cultures, curricula and communities of local schools.
It is not only those with impairments who are categorised as having special educational needs.
Inclusion involves restructuring the cultures, policies and practices in schools so that they
respond to the diversity of students in their locality.
Inclusion is concerned with the learning and participation of all students vulnerable to
exclusionary pressures, not only those with impairments or those who are
categorised as having special educational needs.
Inclusion is concerned with improving schools for staff as well as for students.
A concern with
overcoming barriers to the access and participation of particular students may
reveal gaps in the attempts of a school to respond to diversity more
generally.
All students have a right to an education in their
locality. Diversity is not viewed as a problem to be overcome, but as a
rich resource to support the learning of all.
Inclusion is concerned with
fostering mutually sustaining relationships between schools and
communities. Inclusion in education is one aspect of inclusion in
society.
How To Access Information and Resources
Please use the menu on the left of the page to access the various
sub-sections of this area.
The resources, in the majority of cases, have been written by professional
educators working within the East Riding of Yorkshire LEA, or by
national education bodies such as the Department for Education Standards.
Here you will find useful and relevant information, and teaching
and learning resources where appropriate.
The individual resources or 'objects' are shown in a horizontal
panel, which includes information relating to the use of the item,
and also the file size, so you can make the choice as to what you
download, depending on the specification of your Internet connection.
Just click on the title of the resource to open, or right-click
to save directly to your computer via the "Save target as..." option.
The majority of the teaching and learning resources are designed
to be downloaded, and then saved, altered and repurposed to suit
the requirements of the lesson or individual user.
Please refer to our copyright policy (the link is in the panel
at the foot of the page).
Please use the addresses provided at the foot of this page to contact
us if you would like more information, or you would like to contribute
information or resources for publication on the site.
