' ...an 'at a glance' way of showing the range of provision... '

A provision map is an 'at a glance' way of showing the range of provision a school makes for children with special and other additional needs, through additional staffing or peer support.

Provision mapping was introduced to primary SENCOs as part of central LA training on 'Leading on Inclusion' (DfES 2005).

These materials are aimed at reinforcing the key role of the SENCO in shaping SEN policy and provision in school to raise attainment of children with SEN, as recognised in the 2001 SEN Code of Practice.

Following this training, the LA invited primary schools to join a support group to develop provision maps in their own schools.

The group met regularly and support was available from LA personnel: a Curriculum Project Manager for Inclusion and a Team Leader from the SEN Support Service.

Available to download from the Provision Mapping Resources page is the initial dissemination of that work. The link can be found in the left menu.

The SENCOs in the pilot group will continue to trial and review their provision maps and act as mentors to other SENCOs joining the second year of the project.

The materials available to download include:

  • 'Provision Mapping for Primary Schools' - an outline of the project’s work and an essential introduction to the benefits of provision mapping;
  • 'Seven Steps to Provision Mapping' - a step-by-step approach to provision mapping with case studies from a range of local primary schools. NB: All the steps are necessary if the provision map is to reflect both the identified needs of the pupils AND how the school is meeting them!;
  • Examples of 6 different provision maps to download and use;
  • Staff meeting materials to support the introduction of provision mapping in school.
