SENCO - Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator
The Role of the Area SENCO
All Area SENCOs are qualified teachers with Early Years and special educational needs experience and are part of the Local Authority's Early Years Team, providing support and guidance with the delivery of the Foundation Stage Curriculum.
The overall role of the Area SENCO team is to assist Early Years Education providers in non-maintained (private, voluntary and independent) settings to include all children, and to empower all those working in early education settings to respond to the diverse needs of children in their care.
The Area SENCOs will visit non maintained settings routinely, once a term and will make additional visits if requested. Support with transition will be offered to schools.
How Do Area SENCOs Promote Inclusion?
We aim to give support and advice to SENCOs and other practitioners in the following ways:
- Acting as a 'first port of call';
- Promoting early identification and intervention;
- Supporting observation and assessment of individual children at an early stage;
- Providing advice and guidance with strategies for intervention, including support with writing IEPs;
- Supporting work with parents/carers;
- Helping SENCOs to make appropriate referrals;
- Developing and disseminating good practice;
- Helping to identify the training needs of a setting;
- Developing and delivering training and support materials for SENCOs;
- Ensuring good transition arrangements;
- Facilitating networking with other professionals, settings and agencies;
