Case Study - Tracking the First Four Cohorts
The following report tracks the children who were involved in the first 4 years of
Teaching Children Talking. It follows them through to the end of Key Stage 1 assessments.
The Renfrew Bus Story Test of Narrative Skills
The child is given a picture book and the adult reads the story and then the child then uses the pictures to retell the story.
The child's story is written down and used to measure how many key information words the child uses, the length of their
utterances and whether or not they use subordinate clauses.
The Renfrew Bus Story Test - the child is given a picture book and the adult reads the story and then the child then uses the pictures to retell the story.
They are given an age equivalent score for each of these.
Teaching assistants and nursery nurses from the schools received training to deliver the Teaching Talking assessments and
programme of work with the children.
All 90 children received small group work each week based on activities from the Teaching Children Talking project.
This was designed to boost their confidence along with their social and expressive skills.
It can be seen that occasionally a child did not show an improvement for one or more sections of the test.
However, the teachers reported that in each case there was a reason for the child being 'unsettled' and the test score did not
reflect the child's usual performance.
