The Organisational Development team is responsible for helping the Council to recruit, retain
and develop a diverse workforce.
Introduction to Organisational Development
The work undertaken relates to the workforce in its wider sense including school-based staff as well as private care homes delivering
services on behalf of the council.
The team’s priorities are outlined in the Corporate Workforce Development Strategy.
The team organises and attends many local and national events.
In doing this, people become more conscious of the Council as an employer and it also raises awareness of service critical areas, areas
which are struggling to recruit and retain staff locally (reflecting national trends).
The team includes the Council’s Investors in People Adviser as the Investors in People standard links closely with the Workforce
Development strategy - providing a mechanism for the Council to assess how effective it is in developing its workforce.
The views of employees are monitored an annual Workforce Survey and the results are used to further inform the development of the
Council’s Workforce Strategy.
The Organisational Development Team is keen to work with schools to raise the profile of the Council as a potential employer.
The types of activities, which we would be keen to be involved in and assist with where possible include:
- taking part in Careers evenings (providing an information stand/delivering presentations);
- contributing to conferences by delivering workshops - either relating to the Council as a whole, or specific areas;
- assisting teaching staff to source ‘expert’ information (providing speakers for sessions, developing FREE resource packs which teachers can use);
- assisting with Career guidance (provision of information, facilitating workshops, delivering IT based sessions - linking to LGCareers.com and Futureville;
- sourcing teacher placements and placements for young people;
- and providing ideas for pupil projects.
If you would like to discuss how we can work with you on either these initiatives, or any other ideas which you may have, please don’t
hesitate to contact us.

Doing the small things that make a difference
The DVD, "Social Care: Doing the small things that make a difference" is designed to promote social care as a career and was produced in
partnership between East Riding of Yorkshire Council and AimHigher to encourage more young people to consider working in this sector.
The DVD is aimed primarily at young people aged 14-25, and shows the wide range of jobs available in the social care sector with advice for people
who want to train or work in the industry.
It also gives an insight into the different activities and events that social care staff co-ordinate, to help young people to understand the work
involved in a career in Social Care, and some of the activities staff may be involved in on a daily basis.
It was written and produced in Yorkshire and includes case studies and interviews with Social Care workers and service users from the East
Riding and West Yorkshire, and school children from Beverley.
The DVD was produced by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council Professional Graduate Trainees: Zoë Dodd, Tom Foxton and Helen Wheeler-Osman.
It is presented by former Blue Peter Presenter Diane Louise Jordan, and two members of the East Riding Youth Assembly: Jamie Lewis and Hayli
Ingram.
I thought it was an excellent idea, the DVD was extremely informative and worth watching.
- Hilary Saynor, Chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council
Chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council Hilary Saynor said "I thought it was an excellent idea, the DVD was extremely informative and worth
watching".
"I hope it will encourage young people to consider a career in Social Care".
The DVD will be available in all secondary schools in the East Riding.
There is a limited supply of extra copies, which can be ordered from the Council's Organisational Development Team on 01482 391166.
The DVD is intended to be used in Careers lessons, Health and Social Care lessons, and to aid pupils choose their GCSE options.
The DVD is split into 3 chapters, one looks at working with adults with a learning disability, another other looks at working with older
people, and the third links both chapters together into one whole.
The DVD can therefore be viewed in different ways; as a whole or in two separate parts depending upon the context of the lesson or choice of the
teacher.
The pack contains 2 worksheets which can be used in lessons with the DVD and offers further information for discussion about skills needed for a
career in Social Care, different jobs available, qualification routes into Social Care and profiles of some of the staff members interviewed on the
DVD.
