' Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever. ' - Lance Armstrong (7 time Winner Tour de France 1999-2005)
Gifted and Talented Pupils
Talent Development Squads
Following the success of the East Riding Talent Academy in 2005 and 2006 and the enthusiasm of all the East Riding
Schools to develop talent.
The Sport and Play Development Service have introduced the Talent Development Squads in 12 East Riding Secondary
Schools, these squads contain up to 20 pupils per school who are/or have the potential to be elite/high level athletes.
The pupils must already be at a fairly high level and must show a real commitment in reaching the highest levels in sport.
How do the Development Squads work?
Each school has been asked to select up to 20 young people in their school who they feel have potential to be sports
stars in the future.
The 20 pupils will then have to complete a questionnaire/application form.
All young people will enter a contract to be involved in the project they must really show a desire to be included in
the programme, and develop their talents further.
The Development Squads are a more in depth version than the Talent Academy day, rather than being a mind blowing day of
talent development information, this information will be delivered over a series of bi-monthly/quarterly workshops.
This will allow regular contact with the performers and hopefully have more of an impact on their performances.
What will the benefits be for the performers chosen?
It is envisaged that members of the development squads will be able to access things such as:
- Talent Performer Grants;
- Free access to Leisure Centres (as long as they meet criteria);
- Development Squad Sessions every 2/3 months around nutrition, injury prevention etc;
- Access to an on-line Internet site will advice on nutrition, school - sport balance etc;
- Parent workshops;
- Mentors within school;
- Recognition within their school;
- T-shirts and other merchandise;
- Holiday workshops bringing all athletes together.
Overall this process will allow us to identify future talent from the East Riding and allow us to support them on a
more regular basis.
School Talent Achievement Recognition STAR
Every school has Gifted and Talented pupils, and these pupils, once identified, require high quality teaching and support
to help them fully realise their talents.
This document, STAR, is an auditing/self evaluation tool, showing the East Riding standards, which schools should be
working towards in regard to Gifted and Talented Pupils in PE.
Schools are advised to complete this self-evaluation with the full PE Department, it will help you to highlight current
levels of good practice and measure your current level of performance through each area.
You will be able to identify targets, areas for improvement and also to identify professional development needs for
members of the PE department.
This document had been written inline with National guidelines, know as the Physical Education Quality Standards
for Talent Development.
These quality standards are measures of high quality practice in support of Gifted and Talented pupils in PE.
Therefore this document will allow you to find out where you school stands currently, in line with the Nationally
set criteria.
The East Riding STAR document is split into 3 levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold these levels of award relate to
the OfSTED Ratings as follows:
| Level | OfSTED Rating |
| Gold | Outstanding |
| Silver | Good |
| Bronze | Satisfactory |
It is hoped that the STAR document, if used effectively, will contribute to the development of a dynamic approach to
talent development in physical education, and will aim to bring about key developments that will make a significant
contribution to the provision of quality physical education for all pupils.
