' deter anti-social behaviour and improve social communication skills '

Positive Futures - The Impact
The Sport and Play Development Service operates four Positive Futures projects within the authority, targeting Withernsea, Beverley, Bridlington and Goole.
We use sports as a diversionary activity to allow our staff to build up two way positive and respectful relationships.
Positive Futures is growing in strength to strength. Making a positive impact on the young people it works with.
- Positive Futures
When these have been developed it allows us to provide more personal support and give direction to the young people assisting them in choosing
and opening positive pathways.
The project aims to deter anti-social behaviour and improve social communication skills by reducing swearing and aggressive behaviour and to
promote healthy lifestyles by reducing substance misuse through the use of sports sessions.
It provides training courses to gain qualifications for volunteer and employment opportunities.
It works to raise self esteem and build confidence to turn weaknesses into strengths and use them positively in their lives.
Positive Futures engages socially marginalised young people to participate in sport to positively develop their lives, to help establish and
make new relationships, to develop trust and be able to work as a team.
From the positive futures project this year six young people have enrolled as volunteers.
They are assisting in delivering multi sports sessions in various schemes and projects and gaining qualifications relevant to the field
they are coaching.
Acting as positive role models they are helping younger people improve their behaviour and deter them away from substance misuse.
Truancy and exclusion levels have also been positively impacted.
Just over 18% of truancy and 15% of exclusions have been reduced with participants now attending classes with improved behaviour.
Three young people who where permanently excluded from school are now back on a full time timetable due to the support of Positive Futures
and other inclusion agencies.
Five young people have also found full time employment due to personal development, with raised self esteem and improved social communication
skills enabling confidence to apply for employment opportunities.
