REaction 2007
The REaction days held around the Riding in June 2006 were again a big success.
They attracted more than 2400 Y6 and Y7 pupils and staff from more than 60% of schools in the East Riding, and we received very positive
feedback, appreciative of the opportunity REaction gives pupils to explore aspects of religion in a creative way.
Would your school like to be part of Reaction 2007?
We are presently discussing details of the day with clergy, parish staff and Label of Love, the Christian creative arts team based in Hull.
In 2007 the content of the workshop-style sessions - music, dance, creativity, history, story, and reflection - will be based upon a theme of
Faith in Action.
The day is intended for Y6 and Y7 pupils, in our hope to encourage dialogue around primary/secondary transition; please make suggestions for
any specific input that you would like us to try and arrange.
We shall try to match primaries to their respective secondaries as far as possible, whilst achieving a balance of KS2 & KS3 pupils each day.
It is very likely that some venues will be oversubscribed, and although we hope to accommodate everyone with a chosen date, we would appreciate
it if you can indicate as many acceptable dates as possible.
I shall be writing to participating schools with further information about the REaction theme in the Spring when we have planned the
programme in more detail.
As usual, we shall provide modified RE units of work from the new East Riding schemes to include suggested preparatory and follow-up
activities from which teachers can make their plans for the Summer Term.
Please note - There will be a detailed teachers’ briefing meeting before the event, held at the venue, when a teachers’ pack of workshop briefs,
directions and floorplans, will be distributed.
To ensure the smooth-running of the event on the day, it is essential that all participating schools attend.

The East Riding schools' event, hosted by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, was this year held at the Headlands School and Science College, Bridlington.
It was attended by students and their parents, school staff and governors, councillors, members of the School Improvement Service and SACRE members.

faith2faith 2007
Faith2faith is an interfaith dialogue conference for young people and is an exciting mix of creativity, dialogue and
exploration of faith.
This event was the culmination of a joint project, sponsored by the National Association of SACREs for young people in
Hull and the East Riding.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2006
The East Riding of Yorkshire Council commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day on Friday 27th January 2006 at Vermuyden School.
REaction 2005
Following the hugely successful REaction days in 2004, the latter attracting 1900 Y6 and Y7 pupils and staff from 47 schools in Hull
and East Riding, we are planning another series of REaction days in 2005.

The eight REaction days held around the Riding in June 2004 were a big success.
This was the third successive year that the event has been held.
REaction attracted over 2200 Y6 & Y7 pupils and staff from more than 40 schools in the East Riding, and hundreds of grateful letters poured
in from those who came - children and teachers expressing their delight on many levels, some deeper than others but all very appreciative of the
opportunity REaction gives to explore aspects of religion in a creative way.
Again, there will be changes and improvements for REaction 2005.
REaction is curricular RE in context - an exciting workshop-style mix of active learning, contrasted with individual and group reflection, where
pupils are encouraged to participate and take away both new RE knowledge and understanding plus something much more personal to think about.
Each year there is a different theme linked to the East Riding schemes of work for RE and the day is facilitated by the Hull band of artists Label of
Love as well as local teams of volunteers in each of the Christian places of worship used as venues.
It is a collaboration between the LEA and the Diocese of York.
In 2005, for the first time, the event is included in the Educational Development Plan for the East Riding LEA, and as RE can also be chosen for
Creative Contexts, there will be points of contact between the two, so that for Year 6 pupils, REaction may be the summer term’s culmination of
their project.
In 2005, to fit with Creative Contexts, the content of the workshop-style sessions - music, dance, creativity, history, story, and
reflection - will be based upon a Creation theme, to include environmental issues.
It is hoped that some of the work from Creative Contexts will be on display at REaction.
The days are intended for Y6 and Y7 to encourage dialogue for teachers and pupils around primary/secondary transition.
A teachers’ pack about the theme will be prepared, to fit in with East Riding RE units of work.

Reflections from a SACRE member on Holocaust Memorial Day at Vermuyden School.
The event hosted by East Riding of Yorkshire Council was held in Goole this year at the invitation of Vermuyden School.
It was attended by students and their parents, school staff and governors, councillors, members of the School Improvement Service and SACRE
members.
The introduction was made by Mrs D Newton, Head of RE, who explained a brief history of Holocaust Day, which started on 27th January 2001.
She spoke of Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela, explaining that they were World Peace campaigners, who had made a difference.
In fact, she said 'Making a Difference' was the Theme of the Day.
A poem themed 'A Candle of Reflection' was read by two Year 8 pupils, entitled 'Let There Be Light'.
We then had a film where it was said that Anne Frank had died in a Concentration Camp.
Slides of the Holocaust were shown, and Oscar Schindler’s theme was read 'One Person can make a Difference'.
Evidence was then given to support this theme: Martin Luther King had received the Nobel Peace Prize before being shamefully murdered
in 1968; Nelson Mandela was part of history of the freedom and peace movement, and Bob Geldof with Band Aid, had also been someone who had
shown what one person can do to make a difference.
There then followed Poems by Year 9, a drama presentation by Year 10 and 'The Difference We Make' by Year 8.
Year 10 then spoke of 'One Voice', showing once again how one person can make a difference.
The Vice Chairman of the Council gave a few personal reflections on the theme.
The evening rounded off with a splendid buffet, and an interchange of ideas by people present.
This was a truly worthwhile and interesting event, which hopefully will be repeated each year, not only from an educational point of
view, but so that no-one will ever forget the horrors of prejudice and discrimination, and man’s inhumanity to man.

Holocaust Memorial Day is about commemorating all the communities who suffered as a result of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution, and
demonstrating that the Holocaust is relevant to everyone in the UK today.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2004
In 2004, for the first time, the East Riding of Yorkshire Council agreed to commemorate the January 27th Holocaust Memorial Day.
An excellent information pack about the UK’s fourth national Holocaust Memorial Day, has been produced by government to encourage people
to remember, to reflect, and to educate on the specific 2004 theme:
From the Holocaust to Rwanda - lessons learnt, lessons still to learn.

A short civic event was held at Beverley Grammar School on January 27th (annually the Holocaust Memorial Day) hosted by the Charman of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Cllr. Mary Rose Hardy.

The intention in 2004 was to encourage schools to bring the discussion up to date by
looking at more recent atrocities that raise similar issues, to show that many of the
human tragedies witnessed in the Holocaust have recurred since, albeit in different
contexts and circumstances.
Some of the East Riding of Yorkshire units of work for RE suggest Holocaust-related themes for Year 8 and 9 in units such as It’s for Yo-u (those who are called).
There are other opportunities in history, especially in linking to the citizenship curriculum, and the theme also provides an excellent focus for collective worship.
