Pupils' Area - Ganton Special School
Staff and pupils of Ganton Special School became involved with a project
on stained-glass windows.
Our paintings are based on the windows of St. Andrew’s Church, Kirk Ella, and they were done as part of a topic that looked at
how Bible stories have been made accessible to people according to their needs.
We looked at New Testament passages in the original Greek, then Latin then at the Authorised
version, and we saw that the language changed to suit the need of readers over the centuries.
We also looked at the new Street Bible and saw that Paul’s letters were written in the form of e-mails.
We went onto look at the needs of people who could not read, for whom stained glass windows
rendered Bible stories accessible through images.
The Braille Bible, children’s Bibles and Bible and passion plays all do the same thing.
At our school we use symbol writing to help us understand the written word, and we decided to
write a short Bible story using symbols.
Just as the symbols help our understanding, so the pictures in the stained glass windows
helped the non readers of the time to develop their understanding of the Bible passages shown
in them.
Thanks to the staff and pupils of Ganton Special School for use of their excellent work.
