' If you think education is expensive, try ignorance. ' - Derek Bok
Welcome to the area of eRiding
dedicated to the teaching and learning of issues relating to Small Schools.
Here you will find useful information and resources to support
teaching and learning in this area.
How to Access Information and Resources
The resources, in the majority of cases, have been written by professional
educators working within the East Riding of Yorkshire LEA, or by
national education bodies such as the Department for Education Standards.
Please use the menu on the left of the page to access the various
sub-sections of this area, with some links able to expand to show
more links to pages where a "plus" icon is visible.
Here you will find useful and relevant information, and teaching
and learning resources where appropriate.
The individual resources or 'objects' are shown in a horizontal
panel, which includes information relating to the use of the item,
and also the file size, so you can make the choice as to what you
download, depending on the specification of your Internet connection.
Just click on the title of the resource to open, or right-click
to save directly to your computer via the "Save target as..." option.
The majority of the teaching and learning resources are designed
to be downloaded, and then saved, altered and repurposed to suit
the requirements of the lesson or individual user.
Please refer to our copyright policy (the link is in the panel
at the foot of the page).
Please use the addresses provided at the foot of this page to contact
us if you would like more information, or you would like to contribute
information or resources for publication on the site.
Introduction to Small Schools
This area of eRiding will offer support to small
schools, to share good practice, to disseminate materials and ideas
and to facilitate networking nationally as well as locally.
The quality of education provided by small schools (schools with
approximately 100 on roll) in the East Riding of Yorkshire is impressive.
The website will record collaborative work being undertaken by
small schools in the county, help small school headteachers reflect
analytically on their leadership role and invite comments on relevant
articles about small school issues that will be posted on-line from
time to time.
Effective Learning and Teaching
This site will help teachers explore effective
approaches to learning and teaching.
In particular, it will disseminate information from the School
Improvement Service's Accelerated Learning Project (2002-3) now
known (2003-4) as The Effective Learning and Teaching Project (ELTP).
Click here to visit the dedicated ELTP section of eRiding.
The project draws on the latest understanding of how the human
brain operates and considers the implications of this understanding
for classroom practice.
The website will help reflective classroom practitioners improve
the quality of teaching in their classrooms and promote strategies
for optimising learning.
Further information about Small Schools and the Effective Learning and Teaching Project (ELTP),
contributions, as well as suggestions for the future development of the site, should
