' Activities developed to reinforce the core skills of literacy, numeracy and ICT '

Study Support is learning activity outside normal lessons which young people take part in voluntarily.

We asked schools to identify themselves so that we can decide which to visit as part of this project.

We guarantee, however, that the names of individuals will not be reported in our research.

The survey is available in PDF format by clicking on the document title below.

This survey is subdivided into four areas:

  1. Enabling
  2. Extension
  3. Enrichment
  4. Engagement

By this we mean:

Enabling:

An ever increasing number of activities is being developed to reinforce the core skills of literacy, numeracy and ICT; other activities are also being developed to promote key skills such as problem solving, independent learning and team working.

Extension:

Many study support programmes build upon learning experiences offered through statutory schooling.

These include many traditional areas of study support e.g. drama, music and sport clubs, homework clubs or study weekends.

Enrichment:

Some activities promote an emphasis on learning opportunities that are different from what is being provided through the curriculum in school.

Engagement:

Activities offered by schools that engage/motivate pupils with the teaching and learning ethos of the school.

Some study support ideas can appear in more than on area, eg:

  1. IT being used to develop basic skills = Enabling
  2. IT being used to develop basic skills = Enabling
  3. IT to investigate the contents if a new CD or programme = Enrichment
  4. IT using the computer for games = Engagement

Some study support activities may be seasonal or of limited duration, but pleas include these and review all your activities throughout the year.
